Fire Releasing Ceremony: How to release unwanted energy for the New Year & Beyond

It’s the New Year and it’s time for a fresh start.  With the holidays behind us and the freshness of winter upon us, the start of the year really is a wonderful time to get clear about what we want to create for ourselves this year.

I’ve never been one for making New Year’s resolutions… while it’s a beautiful thought that I might make it to 6am yoga every day in 2016, in reality I know it’s not going to happen.  {As if I really want to leave my warm bed and dreams to go outside in the cold.}   So instead of making promises that I know I’m not going to keep, I did something different this year: I released.

Sometimes the best way to make room in your life for what you want is to release what no longer serves you.  We all have old habits and patterns that we seem to get stuck in.  Whatever it is that’s not serving you, the New Year is the perfect time to release it and ask for a fresh start.

This year I did a Fire Releasing Ceremony to release the attachments that just aren’t serving me anymore.  It’s simple and powerful and I would like to share it with you.

Ask yourself what you need to release

Take a moment to get quiet and go deep within yourself – in your heart & place of knowing – and ask yourself what you need to release or lay down in order to be free, to heal, and to live joyously.  Ignore your head on this one and listen to your heart – you know what you truly need to release.  And don’t forget the wisdom of your dreams – they can be a great source to draw from here.

It can be helpful to create sacred space while you do this and/or set up a simple altar.

Make something that represents what you chose to release

This is your chance to be creative. Write, craft, draw, sculpt, or make something that represents what you need to release.  You can do this however you want; the only requirement is that you use material that burns easily.

And just because you’re going to burn this, it doesn’t give you a pass to do a half-hearted job.  The more creativity you put into this step, the better results you’ll have.

Build a Fire

If you have a fireplace or outside fire pit, these are great places for the Fire Releasing Ceremony. If not you can use a candle or build a small fire in a metal container.  Your fire doesn’t have to be large – just big enough to burn the memento you created.  Just make sure that the fire can release smoke, preferably to the outside.

Ask for Help

Ask the Spirit of Fire to help you release what you need to let go of.

Release

Place each item into the fire and as it burns, say out loud what you are releasing.  ie – I release my fear, I release this relationship, I release this dead person, I release this attachment.

Blow your breath into the fire as you name what you are releasing and watching it burn.  With this action you are literally expelling the unwanted energy from your body & life.

When you have burned all your items, thank the Spirit of Fire for its help.

Make sure the fire is safe and then…

Go outside and take some deep breaths

Now that you’ve released unwanted energies from your life, you have more room in your life for Spirit.

Enjoy your new freedom & the feeling of lightness that comes with it.

  1. This sounds like an amazing thing to do to start the new year. Let go of anything that is not serving me anymore and start the new year with the right intention and positive energy.
