JM DeBord – Dreams, Shamanism & Embracing Fear
Yesterday I had the pleasure of chatting with JM DeBord. Among his many accomplishments, he’s the author of the book Dreams 1-2-3, runs a website on dreams, and is the moderator of Reddit /r/Dreams. He’s been studying and working with dreams for 20 years. And for the past five years he’s been actively teaching dream interpretation through his book, his work on Reddit, and most recently a blog on Huffington Post.

Although I had several questions prepared, I quickly threw them aside and allowed our conversation to unfold organically. And a fascinating discussion it was! Here are some highlights…
Dreams & Shamanism
We touched on an important topic that doesn’t get discussed often enough. And that is the relationship between shamanism and dream work. JM opened up and shared a very personal dream experience (thank you *so* much for sharing), which couldn’t be properly understood using the traditional model of Western dream interpretation.
His experience illustrates that dreams are FAR more than we currently understand. And sheds new light on dealing with recurring dreams – especially if you’re unable to resolve them in the traditional way. It’s a great discussion and well worth listening to – but I won’t recount the story here, I’ll let you listen to JM tell it in his own words
Dealing with Fear
Another great discussion revolved around dealing with fear in dreams. Dreams show us parts of ourselves that we may not be consciously aware of. And sometimes, our dreams can be scary. JM DeBord discusses a useful and practical way of meeting the dream on its own terms and resolving fear subconsciously.
Questioning the Dream
One more gem from the interview was JM’s practice of questioning his dreams. Rather than looking at a dream through the lens of dream interpretation, this practice is about getting into the story of the dream. And using questions to complete/elaborate on the dream story.
